Oftentimes it takes contemplating how Black folks lives have been defined for us throughout all times by people who were not Black. This truth cannot be denied no more than I can change the color of my skin nor allow myself to be categorized and lessened. Therefore, I must take this journey of discovery as all my valiant and resilient ancestors have sojourned in a world where false judgments were presented as the standard of righteousness. Righteousness added to humility with the grace of God may be the answer.
VOLUME V: Ethnography, Ethnology, Anthropology
I want everyone to study those three words in the volume header for this edition. Ethnography means to study the behavior of individual people and what directs their acts toward each other. Ethnology means to highlight individual characteristics and how they inform their place with others in their society. Anthropology means the study of cultures. Now these are paraphrased, but I believe they accurately hold the fidelity to the origins of the words.
Now come with me as I start revealing something about Black people in America. More importantly, why Black people cannot resist a deep psychology urge to ‘stick’ together. Full disclosure of Encyclopaedia Britannica being the current source for this posting. The knowledge it holds doesn’t disappoint.
‘Black people have an internal sense that connects us to our ancestors. It is of a truth that we are alive by their accomplishments and sacrifices’. Black people in America have shown this knowledge never left us. Even though our feet were on ground our ancestors never worked nor did this new ground, as it was not known to have provided food and shelter to our kinsfolk and neighbors.
The literature reads as if it was taken from my memories as a child growing up in the community of Avondale in Birmingham, Alabama. We had constant visits by our kinsfolk. We helped each other when hard times arose. We watched and disciplined each other’s children. We were obligated to each other! Does this sound familiar? It should. I found it through some basic research that took me a couple of hours. Oh, don’t worry. An ungodly amount of research hours is coming for me!
Black people in our ancestral home didn’t connive, cheat and steal in their communities. Yes, I’ll cover the introduction of ‘White Conquerors’. Don’t worry. Black people obviously were not immune to influence peddlers either. But. In spite of all that White Supremacist darkness invading Black people. Black people, as I’ve said before, could not escape what was inside us.
Black people may stray from our roots, but we will never burn our roots to the ground, nor will we salt the ground of the same roots that gave us life!
This part of Black culture was part of the period between AD 500 and 1470 in the Sudanic zone. During this time of enormous change, it would be characterized by great sorrow. Black people couldn’t escape the lust of war that invades every man’s soul. Africa survived in spite of this.
